Vintage machines, FM hits, and acoustic toms under one hood!

 

80s TOM DESIGNER is a dedicated tom instrument built for producers who love the dramatic impact of 80s drums but need modern control and flexibility. At its core are 60 meticulously curated tom sample sets, ranging from classic 80s drum machines (LinnDrum, Simmons, Roland and more) to processed FM toms, modern synthwave kits and expressive acoustic toms.

SAMPLE SOURCES

The classic electronic toms were recorded from a variety of classic drum machines. (LinnDrum LM1 and LM2, Roland TR808, TR505, and TR909, Alesis SR18, Simmons SDS 800 and SDS3, Pearl DRX, MFB 522, …)

Various synthesisers and expanders were also used to design analog toms (Prophet 6, Roland SE-02, MFB Nanozwerg, Dreadbox Typhon) and classic FM toms (Yamaha FB-01, Reface DX, Elektron Digitone).

The acoustic toms were recorded on several tom sets at Studios Palace, in Moulins, France. The samples were created using several high end microphones (Neumann U87, Beyerdynamic MD541 and M201, SE VR1, Schoeps Mk21 and Mk4, Shure Sm7, Beta 57…)

 

Each tom set is mapped across six pitches on a familiar GM‑style layout (F1, G1, A1, B1, C2, D2), making it easy to play convincing tom lines, fills and runs straight from your keyboard or pads.

 

 Create wide tom fills with the stereo controls:

A dedicated stereo‑spread control lets you move from tight mono to wide, panoramic tom kits, ideal for creating classic left‑to‑right (or right‑to‑left) tom fills that sweep across the stereo field. Use the knob to go from tight mono (all the toms are positioned in the center) to extra wide (the toms are spread across the stereo field).

Use the switch to change the order of the toms:

LT <-< HT: Low toms on the left side, high toms on the right

HT >-> LT: High toms on the left side, low toms on the right.

 

Shape the attack of the toms with the transient mixer:

Add bite or punch to the sounds with three additional transients: a short metallic transient (‘Spike’), the impact of a drum stick (‘Stick’), or a deeper punchy transient (‘Thump’)

 

Sculpt larger‑than‑life toms in seconds with the dual reverb engine:

The dual reverb engine features custom impulse responses focused on gated reverbs, gated chambers and plates, giving you instant access to the signature explosive 80s spaces while still allowing more subtle, modern ambience when needed. Complementing this is a flexible FX section with filters, parallel compression, EQ, overdrive and a limiter, so you can shape the attack, body and tail of each tom sound directly inside the instrument.

On top of the sound design tools, 80s TOM DESIGNER includes a dedicated built‑in sequencer designed for instant inspiration. It offers 7 classic tom fill‑ins and 5 tom grooves that can be triggered and combined via 12 keys, so you can perform transitions, fills and patterns without programming a single MIDI note. The modulation wheel introduces live variations and transformations of these fills and grooves, making it easy to add movement, intensity and subtle changes in real time during recording or performance.
